That filing is where the number comes from, and it covers everyone at Alphabet, not only the people working on Google products. The statistics below start with the latest count, then cover how the workforce grew, layoffs, pay, visas and where Googlers work.

In Alphabet’s and Google’s 10-Ks, the headcount label changed from “employees” (2004–2009) to “full-time employees” (2010–2019) and back to “employees” (2020 onward).

30. Alphabet paid $1,579 million in cash for 2023 severance charges during that year (Alphabet 10-K, FY2023). A $77 million severance liability remained at year-end.
31. Alphabet’s employee severance and related charges were $1.0 billion in 2024 (Alphabet 10-K, FY2024). The filing calls that a decrease of $1.1 billion from 2023.

Google told 9to5Google that its “voluntary exit program” let US-based Googlers on the Platforms & Devices team leave voluntarily with a severance package (9to5Google).
What do state layoff filings show?
Employers must notify California before a large layoff at a site in the state. Each notice names the company, the location and the number of workers. Every figure below adds up the notices that carry the same notice date, so none of them is a full year’s total.

Google, AI, and the Engineering Workforce
Alphabet CFO Anat Ashkenazi said on the Q2 2026 earnings call (July 22, 2026) that Alphabet expects to “continue hiring in key investment areas such as AI and cloud” (Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings call transcript).

How much of Google’s new code is written by AI?
37. 75% of all new code at Google was AI-generated as of April 2026, Pichai said (Sundar Pichai, Google Cloud Next 2026). The code was approved by engineers.
38. More than a quarter of all new code at Google was AI-generated in October 2024, Pichai said (Sundar Pichai, Q3 2024 earnings remarks). It was then reviewed and accepted by engineers.
39. Google estimates a 10% engineering velocity increase from AI, Pichai said in June 2025 (Lex Fridman Podcast #471 transcript). He added that Google planned to hire more engineers the next year.

The figures below come from Google’s own country pages, blog posts and statutory filings, in Google’s own wording. Some carry a date and some do not; the undated pages were read on the date at the top of this page. They are not slices of one total.
How many Google employees are in the US?
40. More than 100,000 people worked full-time for Google in the U.S. at the end of 2025 (Google, About Google – United States).
41. Google has an office or data center in 26 U.S. states (Google, About Google – United States).
How many Google employees work outside the US?
42. Google has 7,000+ employees in the United Kingdom (Google, About Google – United Kingdom). Google describes them as engineers, scientists and researchers.
43. Google UK Limited employed 7,029 people on average during the year to 31 December 2024 (Google UK Limited accounts to 31 December 2024, Companies House). Research and development accounted for 3,418 of them.
44. More than 6,000 full-time employees work for Google in Ireland (Google Ireland blog, July 2026). The statement came from Google’s Head of Google Ireland when the Dublin “Bakery” building was unveiled.
45. About 5,900 people worked for Google in Ireland at the time of its 2024/25 statutory gender pay gap report (Google Ireland 2024/25 Binary Gender Pay Gap Report). Google says the Google Ireland Limited entity employs the vast majority of them, about 94%.
In Google Ireland’s statutory report, the “binary gender pay gap” means the difference between men’s and women’s mean and median hourly pay, with men’s pay as the baseline (Google Ireland 2024/25 Binary Gender Pay Gap Report). Google notes the measure does not account for differences in roles.
46. More than 5,000 Googlers work in Zurich, from 85 nationalities, on services including Gemini, Search and YouTube (Google Schweiz, About Google). Google’s Swiss page lists those services alongside the Zurich figure.

Google Workforce Demographics
The figures here come from Google’s Diversity Annual Report. Two notes below explain the dates and labels it uses, because both differ from the quarterly headcount.
In Google’s Diversity Annual Report, “representation data” means the share of Googlers employed on January 1, 2024, while hiring and exit data cover all hires and departures during calendar 2023 (Google Diversity Annual Report 2024).
In Google’s Diversity Annual Report, gender figures are global by default while race figures are U.S. by default, with separate regional cuts for APAC, EMEA and “Americas (non-U.S.)” (Google Diversity Annual Report 2024). “Americas (non-U.S.)” covers every country Google operates in across North and South America except the United States.

Google and H-1B Visas
Google files H-1B petitions for foreign workers every year, and US Citizenship and Immigration Services publishes the decisions employer by employer.
In the USCIS data hub, each figure counts workers covered by an employer’s H-1B petitions, taken from the first decision USCIS made on each petition — not workers currently employed there.
How many H-1B approvals does Google get?
67. USCIS approved H-1B petitions for 5,552 Google beneficiaries in fiscal 2025 (USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub). The hub counts workers on petitions filed by Google LLC across six categories: new employment, continuation, change of employer, change with the same employer, new concurrent employment and amended petitions.

Google Employee Pay and Benefits
Alphabet discloses employee pay in two places: the proxy statement it sends shareholders each year, and the compensation notes in its 10-K and 10-Q filings.
Alphabet’s proxy identifies its “median employee” by analyzing all employees except the CEO as of December 31, 2025, using base salary and target bonus. Wages for part-year employees were annualized.
What does the median Google employee earn?
76. Alphabet’s median compensated employee earned $310,826 in 2025 annual total compensation (Alphabet 2026 Proxy Statement).
77. Alphabet’s CEO-to-median-employee pay ratio was 35 to 1 for 2025 (Alphabet 2026 Proxy Statement).

Alphabet’s 10-K defines “stock-based compensation” as primarily Alphabet restricted stock units, measured at fair market value on the grant date.
